Station steps into 21st century as old equipment is replaced with much needed technology.
Millersville University's radio station, 91.7 WIXQ, has received some
important new technological additions. The station known as "The
Ville" has begun the Fall 2000 Semester with an updated appearance and an
appetite for new recruits.
A major change to WIXQ is the new antenna located on the roof of Ganser
Library. According to Erik Gudmundson, the WIXQ station manager, "the
new antenna has enhanced the quality of the signal to provide a crisp, clearer
sound." Now transmitting at 130 watts, this antenna is the first
replacement since the station originally switched to an FM format.
WIXQ has also made a further leap into the digital age with some very
important computer updates. Gudmundson said that "the station's
analog cart tapes used for station identification and sponsor information are
being replaced with digital sound files." This change not only
provides better sound quality by switching from mono to stereo sound, but also allows
more to be done by computer.
The Ville is providing new ways for listeners to make requests as well.
In addition to contacting the WIXQ DJs by AOL Instant Messenger at the
screenname WIXQ EQUEST to make requests, listeners can now email their requests
to DJs by using equest@wixq.com.
Along with these changes, WIXQ will continue tithe RealAudio stream of their
programs via the Ville's website, http://www.wixq.com/.
The WIXQ website is also expanding its boundaries with several new features,
among which is a growing online music catalog which allows listeners to find out
what music is available at the station. A metal page has also arrived at
http://www.wixq.com/metal/ to offer heavy metal fans certain program times,
album reviews, upcoming shows, and the WIXQ full metal music catalog.
Along with these new features, WIXQ also hopes to add some new faces to the
line-up at The Ville. Gudmundson said, "the station is looking for
DJs who do not fit the typical top 40 format of commercial radio."
