The third in a series of question-and-answer symposiums titled the WIXQ Roundtable, was taped Wednesday afternoon, November 7, and focused on a recent task force report on international education and MU President Joseph Caputo's recent trip to China. Participating in the discussion were Dr. Glenn V. Stephenson, professor of geography and chairman of the task force; Marlene Arnold, instructor of sociology/anthropology and vice-president of the Pennsylvania Consortium for Public Education; Dr. Keith Lovin, vice-president for academic affairs; Dr. Caputo; Jim Cluska, student senate president; Melissa Lintner, editor-in-chief of The Snapper, and Chris Watkins, eductational program director of WIXQ. Dr. Ralph Antonnen, advisor to WIXQ, served as moderator. The student participants began their questioning, asking Daputo about the differences he observed between the Chinese educational system and that of the U.S. Caputo said that the Chinese are moving away from the Russian system of the 1950's toward the American system of the 80's. He added that the Chinese are combining separate colleges of commerce, cuisine, and technology into universities. "It does appear that they're making an attempt now to increase the enriollment at the universities, to build additional facilities, and, therefore, to expand educational opportunity to the degree that they can." Caputo said that the Chinese strongly believe that education is important to them for economic development and modernization purposes. Caputo said that he feels MU would benefit from an exchange program with China, adding that to properly internationalize the MU campus, a larger percantage of the student body must consist of foreign students. Stephenson said that his task force had determined that the proper percentage requires a total of 150 students as opposed to the current 50. Stephenson also said that the task force was considering bringing in students from a diversity of geographical areas. [There was more talk of the foreign exchange program.] |
