WIXQ-FM Goes Stereo

[Lancaster Newspaper - 01/??/1985]

MU's campus radio station began broadcasting in stereo with the start of the spring 1985 semester.

As a result of this move, WIXQ-FM is now the first college station in the region to broadcast its programs in stereo. For those persons new to the MU family, the station can be heard by dialing 91.7 on the FM band.

Dr. Ralph G. Anttonen, faculty advisor to WIXQ-FM, said that the switch from monophonic to stereo broadcasting was made possible by the purchase of approximately $9,000 in new equipment during the past two years.

A stereo control board, modulation monitor and an exciter were among the key purchases. Money for the equipment came from savings over the years and from MU student activities fee allocations earmarked for capital improvements, according to Anttonen.

The University's radio station has come a long way since it first was established as a carrier-current facility in the mid-1960's and had the call letters WMSR. At that time broadcasting was limited to closed-circuit and sent only to the dorms.

The station became WIXQ-FM in rhw mis-1970's when it received a license from the Federal Communications Commission to broadcast at 10 watts on the FM band. Two years ago, the FCC authorized a boost in power to 150 watts providing a strong signal for all of Lancaster County and adjacent areas.

With a format of primarily album-oriented rock, WIXQ-FM is now on the air seven-days-a-week from 11am to 2 am during the spring and fall semesters. News and information programs are also scheduled throughout the broadcast day. Specialty programming includes Anttonen's Golden Oldies Show Saturdays at 4pm, Dr. Dita Smith's telephone call-in program Sundays at 5pm, and Dr. Charles Scharnberger's Swing King Show Saturdays at 2pm. Local bands are featured on Tuesdays at 9pm.
