WIXQ Airs Roundtable (excerpts)

[The Snapper - 10/??/1984]

Last Wednesday, October 16, WIXQ aired their first live "Roundtable," a talk show for the campus and community.

The discussion touched on the present and future negotiagions on the students' role in the State System of Higher Education, te walkout and other methods of student involvenment, and the relationship between tuition and legislative approperiations in faculty salary increases.

The members of the panel were MU President Dr. Joseph Caputo, Paul Campbell and Pete Anders from the Student Senate, The Snapper's Harry Shenk, and Tom Casetta, WIXQ Station Manager. The moderator was Bill Myers, WIXQ Education Directer.

Dr. Caputo started by giving an update on the state of the settlement process. The tenative settlement was reached October 5. The faculties across the state voted on the contract during the week of October 14 to 18, with the voting on the MU campus taking place Thursday and Friday of that week.

The votes were counted in Harrisburg on Monday. If the contract is ratified, there will be no possibility of a strike for at least two years, but if the present offer is not ratified, "the threat of a strike is very, very grave," according to Caputo.

Asked for details of the settlement, Caputo said, "Both the SSHE system and the faculty leadership who were responsible for negotiating the tenative settlement have characterized the settlement offer as fair." He went on to say that the contract ends the decline in faculty compensation relative to other faculties across the United States, and reverses it.
