Millersville State College radio station WIXQ-FM (91.7) can now be heard throughout
Lancaster and portions of adjacent counties.
On Sept. 1 the station boosted its power from 10 to 100 watts. WIXQ faculty
adviser Dr. Ralph Anttonen indicated the wattage increase gives the station a strong 15 to
20 mile range, meaning a large portion of southeastern Pennsylvania is now within the
prime listening area.
During a recent signal strength evaluation investigation WIXQ was heard as far away as
York, Reading, Coatesville and areas in northern Maryland.
The station, which currently broadcasts seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 3 a.m.,
features a diversified format requiring selective listening.
According to student manager, Mike Bauer, programs include jazz, gospel, funk, soul,
swing, avant-garde, 50's, easy listening, and pure rock 'n roll music.
"News, sports and weather are offered during most shows and widely diversified
information programs, with guest interviewees are slated to be 'aired' in October.
"In addition, special programs such as feature interviews, album/artist
spotlights, comedy, local bands and creative staff productions, are interspersed
throughout the program schedule," Bauer added.
Millersville students held an outdoor concert Saturday to celebrate the station's power
increase and to welcome students back for the start of the fall semester.
Music was provided by the Susquehanna River Band and the Skamatics, a ska-reggae group,
while mime Bill Maxey of Lancaster entertained between musical sets.
A large number of colorful balloons were also released during the evening's activities.
