The Doc Rocks at MSC

[Glenda Clippinger - 01/30/1980]

"Those oldies, but goodies remind me of you." Little Caesar and the Romans sang it in the 1950's. But, few students at MSC actually lived through that golden age. WIXQ changes all that when the station presents their own Doc Roc. The Doc Roc show can be heard every Saturday from 4-7 p.m. on WIXQ, 91.7 FM and 600 AM.

The Mysterious Doc Roc, also known to some as Dr. Ralph Anttonen, is the Director of Educational Research at Stayer Research Center and is also the Chairman of the Teacher Education Services Department. Doc joined the staff of WIXQ in 1975 when he was discovered while doing an oldies dance in the SMAC. Although Doc says he was "conned" into doing his first show, he hasn't missed one in nearly five years.

The "Doc Roc Show" is in more than one sense a family affair. An engineer has always been a necessary part of the show. Since 1975 Doc has had several engineers, but his favorite is "Mama Rock," his high school sweetheart and wife. Doc's children, Cricket and Eric, also help with his show by picking songs and pulling records.

The "Doc Roc Show" is a family affair in another way also. Although Doc draws a lot of student listeners, the majority of his listening audience are parents who have a hankering for the music of the 50's , and their children who tune in to win the many prizes that the Doc gives away. These prizes include Big SMAC sandwiches, buttons, Doc Roc rocks and gift certificates to the bookstore, compliments of the M.S.C. administrators.

Aside from being one of WIXQ's more popular D.J.'s, Doc is the station's faculty adviser. Doc commented, "I like to work with people and build things...it's very rewarding when they work out well." Which part of the radio station does Doc like best? All he would say is that he has confidence in the students and enjoys working with them. Doc says he anxiously awaits every Saturday at 4:00 when he gets behind the mike with three more hours of those "golden oldies."

WIXQ's Doc Roc is just one of the people who bring the music to Millersville.
