WMSR To Whistle A Different Tune, Station Plans To Change Affiliate

[Carrie Kroehler (The Snapper) - 11/05/1975]

WMMR, WISP, WDJQ, WIOQ, WXQA - it's up to J.J. Williams, program director for WMSR, to make the final decision on WMSR's associate radio station.

Currently affiliated with Philadelphia's WMMR, the WMSR staff is considering several other stations as affiliates. The associate station is heard when WMSR is not broadcasting its own material.

Surveys distributed three weeks ago show that few students listen to WMSR, Millersville's student-run radio station. Of the students who returned the survey, 53% were in favor of changing the associate station.

"The change is a must because we are funded by the students, and we have to answer to their demands," said J.J. Williams. Responsible for all material on the WMSR airway, he will have ultimate control over the change to another associate station. He wants to do what the listeners dictate and believes that the majority will prefer the change. WMMR, the Philadelphia station currently affiliated with WMSR, no longer "meshes" with Millersville's station. Williams believes that the format is not compatible with that of WMSR and that this difference causes competition between the stations.

Williams is also interested in increasing the variety of music played on the MSC station. He stated that students are basically exposed to "two types of music - soul and hard rock - and I want to expand their (the students) listening."

Several alternate stations have been suggested. The two being most seriously considered at this point are WDJQ, out of Baltimore, and WIOQ from Philadelphia. Students interested in expressing their opinions may send comments to J.J. Williams at the station office in the SMC or call ext. 522.

"The change is easy to make," says Williams. He will write to the station and ask permission to use it as an associate. He hopes to finalize the change by Thanksgiving.
